Travel Guide: How to travel from Oslo Airport (OSL Gardermoen) to Sjusjøen

Oslo Airport Gardermoen is strategically located on the north side of Oslo, making the journey up to Sjusjøen both quick and easy. Whether you prefer the freedom of a rental car or want to relax on the train, the trip takes just under two hours. Here are the two best ways to travel from the airport to the idyllic cabins at Sjusjøen:

Option 1: By car (The fastest and most flexible solution)

Renting a car at Gardermoen gives you maximum freedom, especially if you are shopping for food for the week or have a lot of ski equipment. All the major car rental companies (Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Budget) are located in the arrivals hall.

• Running time: Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes (depending on weather and road conditions).
• Distance: Approximately 150 km.

Driving route (step by step):

• Follow E6 North: Straight out of the airport, you drive onto the E6 in the direction of Hamar and Lillehammer.
• Follow the E6 past Hamar and Moelv: You drive on a modern and safe four-lane highway for much of the way, which makes the drive very comfortable.
• Turn off at Lillehammer: When you approach Lillehammer, turn off the E6 at the sign for Sjusjøen / Mesnali / Nordseter (highway 216).
• Follow Sjusjøvægen upwards: Follow highway 216 uphill into the terrain. The road winds beautifully up towards the mountain. After about 20 minutes of climbing you will arrive in the center of Sjusjøen.

Option 2: By train and bus (Eco-friendly and relaxing)

The Norwegian train network (operated by Vy) runs directly from the station below the airport. This is an incredibly comfortable way to travel, where you can sit and enjoy the view of Lake Mjøsa along the way.

• Travel time: Approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes by train + 30 minutes by bus.

Here's how:

• Take the train from Gardermoen: Go straight down to the train station at the airport. Take Regional train RE10 towards Lillehammer. The train has frequent departures (usually once an hour).
• Get off at Lillehammer Skysstasjon: Lillehammer is the final station for this train, so you can safely relax until the train stops.
• Change to bus 501: Right outside the train station in Lillehammer is the bus terminal. Here, bus route 501 (Lillehammer – Sjusjøen) goes all the way up to the mountain. The bus often corresponds well with the trains.
• Arrival Sjusjøen: The bus stops at several places on Sjusjøen, including at the Kiwi store (Sjusjøen intersection).
